The story so far.

Back in the clearing, Pippin, Merry, and Sam were clustered around Frodo, who was sitting with his head bowed. Finally, Frodo looked up. "I wish Gandalf was here.

"He would tell you," Aragorn said; "This task was yours, not Galadriel's."

"Would he?" Frodo asked. "How many times did he say 'let the Ringbearer decide'? Well, I have decided; the Ring has passed from me." He looked beseechingly at Aragorn. "I hope, now, that you will see me home."

The Ring has fallen into the hand of Galadriel.

Saruman was so startled that he almost jerked back from the Palantir. But he focused his mind. What would you have me do?

Send the Uruk-Hai against Lothlórien.

That didn't surprise him, but when he asked, how many, the answer did.

All.

Pippin looked decidedly ill as he shoved the leaves that had wrapped the lembas out of sight under his cloak. Merry looked up from stuffing the Elven bread into his own pack. "Will you be coming home with us?"

"No," he said. "My people are suffering, and I have been away too long."

"We understand -- don't we, Pip?"

Pippin looked like he was going to argue, but he nodded at last. Boromir was relieved; he'd come to think of the Little Ones almost like brothers. But his own little brother had been fighting on the front lines while he made his way through the wilderness.

A day hadn't passed that he'd not felt guilty about that, though he knew that Frodo's quest had carried the possibility of breaking the power of Mordor once and forever.

The Ring might still bring them victory -- just not in the way that the Council had thought.

"I would have you see the White City one day," he told Pippin and Merry. "But I will be traveling hard and fast; 'tis no journey for a Hobbit.

"We'll come visit you one day," Pippin said. "After you've won."

"Of course," Boromir said, though in his heart he knew that such a victory could very well come at the cost of his own life. "Until we meet again, my friends."

He turned, and headed for the boat. On the way, he passed Aragorn and Legolas.

"Gimli and I will travel south with Galadriel," the Elf said.

"I wish I could go with you," Aragorn replied. "But I have a responsibility to Frodo and the others."

"Had our fates been different," Boromir said, "I know we would have gone together to the end. Take good care of them."

"I will. Boromir -- watch yourself. And not only from Mordor. The One Ring corrupts all it touches."

Legolas opened his mouth as if to argue, but Aragorn spoke first. "I hope I am wrong, for her sake. If not, you and Gimli must be her strength."

"We will. Guard Frodo and the others well -- I believe that you may still be followed."

It was time. Boromir knew that he was only delaying the inevitable. He walked to the river, and pushed the boat out into the current.

Aragorn did not watch Boromir as he paddled away. Instead he got the hobbits moving on the long journey back to the Shire.
