Disclaimer: George Lucas owns Star Wars. I own a 22-year-old pickup truck. I hope that Mr. Lucas will accept this story as the tribute to his genius it is, and not sue me for what little I have. No infringement is intended, no profit is being made. Mando'a was invented by Karen Traviss and is also property of Lucasfilm.

They've banged out of the dustball Etain was stationed on and are on their way to Mandalore. Etain hasn't spoken since they left. She went to the 'fresher to clean up an hour and a half ago, and hasn't come out..

It's not, Darman thinks, as if this was her first time under fire. Not even her first time under friendly fire, if you count Qiilura, which he doesn't really. He wishes he could use the Force; he wishes he could do more than knock

"Talk to me, Et'ika," he whispers. "Please?"

He hears a couple rough breaths, and then she speaks. "They looked -- just like you."

He struggles desperately for a light tone. "They didn't have our pretty black armor, though." He's not sure if the sound she makes is a laugh or a sob. "Et'ika, you did what you had to. It was war. It was you or them, you or ... "

"Basher. Ehn. Aaray. I told them that I would take care of them."

"You would have. You did. Right up until they fired on you."

Silence.

And suddenly he's furious. "You want to blame somebody? Blame the Republic. Blame the Kaminoans. Blame that chakaar Palpatine for giving Order 66. How many friends did you lose today?"

Another sob, and he thinks survivor's guilt. How stupid could he be? He wishes Kal'buir was here, he'd know what to say.

"Please come out, Et'ika," he says. "Somebody will need the 'fresher, sooner or later." Which is stupider than anything he's ever said, but the door slides open. She stands there, shaking, tears rolling down her face, and then falls into his arms.
